 Why Teach?

Hi, my name is Bella and I am very excited about this course. Truthfully, teaching for me has always seemed like the only choice. Growing up when I would hear my class mate's future job answers being astronauts or singers, my idols were always my teachers. Spending five days a week, and seven hours a day with someone, you spend a lot of time with them. With all that time together, teachers have a huge effect on our lives, not just educationally but developmentally, whether they intend to or not. I have had some teachers that have helped me when I was at my lowest and some I am even friends with today. And others have been not so good in that they have told me they hoped I failed and made me lose my love for learning as a student. As I look back on both types of teachers I am inspired to follow in the footsteps of the ones that loved their students and to be better than those that don't.

When I found out about TXST being a teacher's school I knew to apply. Right now I am a sophomore elementary ed major and I have loved my experience here so far. I would like to teach kindergarten but if not, any k-5 grade. I hope to teach and travel during my first few years of college. I am hoping to teach in Costa Rica where my family lives for a while after graduation. I grew up visiting a couple times a year but I think living there for an extended period would be a nice experience. There isn't really a specific subject to teach that catches my attention. That is why I think elementary would be perfect, getting to teach a little bit of everything but also teaching life skills that play a role in the early years.

I look forward to this semester and getting to know y'all!!

  2. Hi Bella! It is just wonderful that teaching has always seemed like the only choice. Teaching and traveling sounds so exciting. I have a former student/friend that I can try to put you in touch with if you'd like to meet someone who does that.
